For my internship, I was looking for a suitable organization from where I could learn many aspects that would help me in my self-development. I first came to know of HERD from my sister who used to work here. She had begun her career at HERD and explained to me how she had learnt many things with this organization. She was very insistent that this would be a great learning opportunity for me. Later my father, who is also a public health worker, said the same and convinced me that HERD was a good organization for young learners like me. I finally came to join HERD as an intern since February.
At HERD, I was placed in the research uptake and communications department. I got an opportunity to mix-up and work with the research and communications team. The first task I was assigned at HERD was Media Monitoring – scanning through various media sources to gather relevant information on issues related to health, education, nutrition, among others. In my first week, I also had a chance to participate in the national reconstruction survey where I assisted in the recruitment process of engineers. Later I was involved in writing the Backgrounder Series as part of HERD publication. I was further involved in doing some scoping studies as well as developing case studies.
I have been highly impressed with the working environment at HERD. I found that everyone was dedicated towards work and assigned responsibilities. Everyone was supportive and helpful and I felt very easy to adjust myself in the organization. I have found HERD members to be extremely hard working, responsible, inspirational and with great working attitude. This being my first position in an office atmosphere, I did not know exactly what to expect and was anxious about how things were going to be. However, adapting to this environment was not as difficult as I initially thought. I have learnt how to behave in a workplace. Working at HERD and getting used to everything here has definitely prepared me for whatever my next position may be. Just by observing the everyday events here has taught me more about teamwork, and how people can come together to get things done.
This has been a great experience for me. I am grateful for the opportunity I got to learn from and work with individuals from diverse background and lots of experience. Working at HERD has truly helped me broaden my horizon of knowledge and make me more responsible and hardworking. I have tried my best to work with a positive attitude, good work ethic and a willingness to get involved in wherever I was needed. Not only did I earn the respect of my colleagues, I was given the opportunity to get involved, even more than I ever imagined. I would like to thank Dr. Sushil Baral and Mr. Sudeep Uprety for providing me with this valuable opportunity. I look forward to learn more from HERD and I am sure this will be an important asset for my career development. This has truly been a great learning experience and I will be forever indebted to everyone who gave me a hand here.
